Photography Gear Essentials, Destination Photographer Erica Melissa

As a professional photographer, my toolkit is my lifeline. Whether I’m capturing the magic of a destination wedding, the dynamics of a family gathering, the essence of a brand, the intensity of a sports event, or the dynamics of a commercial shoot, having the right equipment is crucial. Based in both Chicago and Miami, I often find myself traveling to various destinations, and my gear needs to be versatile, reliable, and of the highest quality.

From photography peers,  students, to clients as well as mentees, this is probably the most asked questions that I receive. What kind of camera do you use? What kind of lenses should I invest in as a (wedding, sports, family) photographer? So I thought it would be helpful to share a peek into my toolkit and the equipment I use and rely on to create stunning images within the body of versatile work that I love so dearly!

I will provide amazon links to shop if you’re ready to add to cart or your wishlist and start building up your toolkit.

The first links listed are compatible for the Canon R5 and R6 – RF lens mounts, however I am listing *EF mounts as well that you can utilize with an adapter or if you have another EOS Canon Camera such as the 5d Mark IV/III/II etc.

Professional Cameras

Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Camera and my secondary body is the Canon EOS R6: These are my 2 main camera bodies that I utilize, and they are exceptional for several reasons. The Canon R5 offers a 45MP full-frame sensor, which is perfect for capturing detailed images, especially in wedding and commercial photography where clarity is paramount. The Canon R6, with its 20MP sensor, is excellent for low-light conditions, making it ideal for events and sports photography. Both cameras have impressive autofocus systems, which are crucial for capturing fast-moving subjects and candid moments.

Be sure to include extra batteries! I keep an additional 6 extra for full day events. Thankfully they both use the same kind:

Lenses

70-200mm f/2.8: This lens is incredibly versatile and perfect for weddings and events. The focal length range allows me to capture both close-up shots and distant subjects without compromising image quality. The f/2.8 aperture is great for low-light conditions and provides beautiful background blur.

85mm f/1.2: Known for its stunning bokeh and sharpness, this lens is a favorite for portraits and branding shoots. The wide aperture allows for excellent subject isolation and is fantastic in low-light situations.

50mm f/1.2: Often referred to as the “nifty fifty,” this lens is a staple in my kit. It’s lightweight, incredibly sharp, and perfect for a wide range of photography, from family portraits to commercial shoots.

35mm f/1.4: This lens is ideal for environmental portraits and wider shots. The f/1.2 aperture allows for great depth of field control and is excellent in low light. It’s perfect for capturing the atmosphere of a location, making it a favorite for destination weddings and events.

24-70mm f/2.8: If I had to pick one lens to use for an entire shoot, this would be it. The focal length range makes it incredibly versatile, suitable for wide-angle shots and close-ups. It’s a great all-purpose lens for any situation, from weddings to commercial photography.

15-35mm f/2.8 : This wide-angle lens is essential for capturing expansive landscapes, architecture, and large group shots. It’s particularly useful in destination photography where the location plays a significant role in the story.

Photography Gear Essentials: Accessories

Tripods: Stability is key, especially in low-light conditions or when using longer focal lengths. I always have a sturdy tripod and a monopod in my kit. But as a wedding and destination photographer, traveling light and compact is key! So this addition is perfect to add to your kit!

External Flashes and Lighting: Good lighting can make or break a photo. I use Godox V1 external flashes and portable lighting setups to ensure I can control the light in any situation, whether it’s an indoor event or a nighttime shoot. (Be sure to include extra flash batteries in your kit as well!)

Memory Cards and Batteries: Running out of memory or power is not an option. I carry multiple high-capacity memory cards and spare batteries to ensure I can shoot continuously without interruptions.

The Canon R5 is dual card slots, so it takes both CF Express as well as SD cards. Both the R6 and the upgraded R6 Mark II has dual card slots for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, with support for UHS-II cards. Typically dual card slots are used for overflow, or for backup in case one card fails. You will want to have several in your kit:

Camera Bags and Cases: Protecting my gear is crucial, especially when traveling. I use durable camera bags and cases to keep my equipment safe and organized.
